The issue has two branches: increase of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere, and destroying the methods of removing that carbon dioxide.
A great contributor to the issue is the cow, sounds crazy right? Cattle are known to fart/burp all day long, and as weird as that is - that is constant emitting of methane (a greenhouse gas like carbon dioxide).
Just to make it worse, cattle farming needs land, and that land includes the Amazon rainforests. The Amazon rainforests are being destroyed for space for cattle. The destruction of those rainforests and other forests around the world is more important than it sounds. Trees serve as a carbon sink, with the purpose of taking in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen.
This means trees are crucial to that second branch of the issue: removing existing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
A beef-free week can turn the tables in various ways.
Beef production in the Amazon lessens if we decrease demand, affecting farmers and companies that destroy those rainforests.
Sunrise Springfield will show ourselves effective and be able to work with larger groups, and ultimately have greater impacts.
